अलभत् गौतमी पुत्रम् अश्वत्थामानम् एव चalabhat gautamī putram aśvatthāmānam eva caGautami (Kripi) obtained a son -- Ashvatthaman

अश्वस्य इव अस्य यत् स्थाम नदतः प्रदिशः गतम्aśvasya iva asya yat sthāma nadataḥ pradiśaḥ gatam"since the voice (sthaman) of him, neighing like a horse, has spread through the quarters of the sky,
अश्वत्थामा एव बालः अयं तस्मात् नाम्ना भविष्यतिaśvatthāmā eva bālaḥ ayaṃ tasmāt nāmnā bhaviṣyatitherefore this boy shall be called by the name Ashvatthaman"

Here Ashvatthaman is born -- Drona's only son. Notable is the piety of the mother Kripi: "devoted to the agnihotra, to dharma, and to self-restraint" -- a virtuous mother, as befits the parent of a worthy son. Notable too is the sign at his birth: the infant's voice, mighty as the neighing of a celestial horse, and the heavenly naming -- a mark of the child's extraordinary nature. Yet the bitter fate of Ashvatthaman is also worth remembering: the beloved son of a brahmin will become one of the most tragic figures of the epic, whose fury at the war's end will bring a curse upon him. Thus the scripture, while showing Drona's joy over his son, quietly introduces the one whose lot will be darkened; and Drona's fatherly love for Ashvatthaman will later become the lever by which Drona himself is broken.
