Drona said: "To the great sage Agnivesha I went in olden days for the sake of weapons, O undying one, wishing to master the science of archery; chaste and humble, wearing matted locks, I dwelt there for many long years, desiring to master the dhanurveda. The prince of Panchala, the mighty Yajnasena, studied together with me, laboring attentively under our teacher; there he was my friend, obliging and dear to me, and from childhood, O Kaurava, we studied together. He came to me there, one who did what was pleasing, sweet of speech, and said to me, O Bhishma, a word that deepened our affection: 'I am the most beloved son of my great-souled father, O Drona; when my father anoints me to the kingship, the kingdom shall be yours to enjoy, friend -- I swear it to you truly; my pleasures, my wealth, and my joys will be at your disposal.' So hearing this, I, having mastered weapons, set out, desiring wealth; and hearing that he had been anointed king, and thinking, 'I have attained my goal,' I came once more to my dear friend, now enthroned, greatly pleased, remembering our friendship and that word of his."

Here Drona reveals the foundation of his grievance -- Drupada's broken oath. It is notable that Drona did not come uninvited but on the solemn promise of a friend who had sworn 'truly' to share the kingdom with him. Here is the weight of a broken word: an oath given in friendship is sacred, and its violation a sin, the greater for having been given freely. Notable too is Drona's guileless trust: he relied on his friend's word and was deceived -- a lesson in how fragile are promises made in contentment and forgotten in power. A subtler point is discernible here as well: Drona himself went 'desiring wealth' -- and his self-interest, though understandable in his need, somewhat clouded the purity of his coming. Thus the text shows both sides: Drupada's treachery and Drona's not wholly disinterested hope, out of which a long feud will grow.
