ततो ऽर्जुनं मूर्ध्नि तदा समाघ्राय पुनः पुनः ॥
प्रीतिपूर्वं परिष्वज्य प्ररुरोद मुदा तदा ॥
ततो द्रोणः पाण्डुपुत्रान् अस्त्राणि विविधानि च ॥
ग्राहयाम् आस दिव्यानि मानुषाणि च वीर्यवान् ॥
राजपुत्रास् तथैवान्ये समेत्य भरतर्षभ ॥
अभिजग्मुस् ततो द्रोणम् अस्त्रार्थे द्विजसत्तमम् ॥
वृष्णयश् चान्धकाश् चैव नानादेश्याश् च पार्थिवाः ॥
सूतपुत्रश् च राधेयो गुरुं द्रोणम् इयात् तदा ॥
स्पर्धमानस् तु पार्थेन सूतपुत्रो ऽत्यमर्षणः ॥
दुर्योधनम् उपाश्रित्य पाण्डवान् अत्यमन्यत ॥

abhijagmus tato droṇam astrārthe dvijasattamam ||
vṛṣṇayaś cāndhakāś caiva nānādeśyāś ca pārthivāḥ ||
sūtaputraś ca rādheyo guruṃ droṇam iyāt tadā ||
spardhamānas tu pārthena sūtaputro 'tyamarṣaṇaḥ ||
duryodhanam upāśritya pāṇḍavān atyamanyata ||
'Then, smelling Arjuna's head again and again and embracing him with love, Drona wept for joy. Then the valorous Drona instructed the sons of Pandu in various weapons -- divine and human. And other princes too, having gathered, O bull of the Bharatas, came to Drona, the best of the twice-born, for the sake of weapons -- as did the Vrishnis, the Andhakas, and kings from various lands. And the charioteer's son Radheya (Karna) came then to the teacher Drona; vying with Partha, the charioteer's son, exceedingly intolerant, took refuge with Duryodhana and despised the Pandavas.'

Here appear both the teacher's love for Arjuna and Karna's envy -- the two poles of the drama to come. Telling are Drona's tears of joy at Arjuna's unconditional devotion: the guru answers love with love, and thus is formed that special bond of teacher and disciple which will make Arjuna the greatest. Telling too is the appearance of Karna: equal to Arjuna in talent, he is driven not by devotion but by rivalry and intolerance (atyamarshana); and this envy pushes him toward Duryodhana. One sees here how envy determines destiny: Karna, capable of becoming great, poisons his gift with envy and contempt and thereby joins the camp of adharma. Thus the scripture brings together, under one teacher, love and envy, devotion and rivalry; and from this knot -- Karna's friendship with Duryodhana and Drona's love for Arjuna -- the coming war will be woven.
