Here the very heavens take sides in the quarrel of these sons. It is telling that Indra shrouds Arjuna with clouds while Surya, out of love for his son, disperses the clouds over Karna: the divine fathers unseen come to the defense of their children. It shows that this duel of men mirrors the affection of the gods above, for both warriors are sons of divinity. Telling too is the division of the arena: the Kauravas beside Karna, Bhishma with the teachers beside Arjuna — so the two future armies visibly take shape. Here the whole of creation — sky, gods, and men — is seen splitting in two around this enmity; and in this small image of the arena the coming Kurukshetra already shows through, where these same camps will meet in death.
