स वैरं मनसा ध्यात्वा द्रोणो द्रुपदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
tato 'bhijagmuḥ pāñcālān nighnantas te nararṣabhāḥ ||
mamṛdus tasya nagaraṃ drupadasya mahaujasaḥ ||
te yajñasenaṃ drupadaṃ gṛhītvā raṇamūrdhani ||
upājahruḥ sahāmātyaṃ droṇāya bharatarṣabhāḥ ||
bhagnadarpaṃ hṛtadhanaṃ tathā ca vaśam āgatam ||
sa vairaṃ manasā dhyātvā droṇo drupadam abravīt ||
'Then those bulls among men attacked the Panchalas, striking them down, and crushed the city of mighty Drupada. Having seized Yajnasena-Drupada at the forefront of battle, they brought him with his ministers to Drona. And having pondered in his mind the old enmity, Drona spoke to Drupada — broken in pride, stripped of wealth, fallen under another's power.'

Here Drona's revenge is accomplished: proud Drupada lies defeated and captured. The threefold description of his fall is telling — 'broken in pride, stripped of wealth, fallen under another's power' — the one who once haughtily spurned a friend now lies humbled at his feet. This is karma at work: Drupada's trampled pride returns to him a hundredfold; he who humiliated is now humiliated. Tellingly, Drona 'pondered the old enmity' before he spoke: even at the moment of triumph, he is moved not by what is right but by the memory of a grievance. Scripture thus reveals the bitter law of retribution in the world of passion: injury breeds revenge, revenge breeds fresh humiliation, and humiliation breeds a new injury; and this circle, having barely closed upon Drupada, at once begins another turn.
