tataḥ kṛtasvastyayanā rājyalābhāya pāṇḍavāḥ ||
kṛtvā sarvāṇi kāryāṇi prayayur vāraṇāvatam ||
'Thus entreated by the son of Pandu, all those Kauravas, their faces grown clear, blessed the Pandavas: "May there be well-being for you on the road always, and from all beings everywhere; and may nothing ill befall you from anywhere, O delights of Pandu." Then the Pandavas, the blessing having been performed over them, having completed all necessary affairs, set out for Varanavata.'

Here the elders bless those departing to their doom -- and in this lies both sorrow and hope. It is telling that all bless them 'with clear faces': the righteous elders (Bhishma, Vidura, Drona) are sincere in their love, either unaware of or not party to the treacherous design, and their blessed words are no empty rite but an effective protection. Here the power of the blessing of the righteous is revealed: it will, as Yudhishthira asked, shield the brothers, and evil 'will not overcome' them -- not for nothing will the Pandavas escape the house of lac. Telling too are the words 'for the attainment of the kingdom' (rajya-labhaya): though the brothers go as if into exile, the scripture already sees further -- their departure will turn into an ascent, and the plot into their salvation and coming triumph. Thus the scripture sends the Pandavas off to Varanavata under the protection of blessings, turning an apparent defeat into a step toward victory by providence.
