ते वयं मृगयाशीलाश् चराम वसुधाम् इमाम् ॥
तथा नो विदिता मार्गा भविष्यन्ति पलायताम् ॥
भौमं च बिलम् अद्यैव करवाम सुसंवृतम् ॥
गूढोच्छ्वसान् न नस् तत्र हुताशः संप्रधक्ष्यति ॥
वसतो ऽत्र यथा चास्मान् न बुध्येत पुरोचनः ॥
पौरो वापि जनः कश् चित् तथा कार्यम् अतन्द्रितैः ॥
te vayaṃ mṛgayāśīlāś carāma vasudhām imām ||
tathā no viditā mārgā bhaviṣyanti palāyatām ||
bhaumaṃ ca bilam adyaiva karavāma susaṃvṛtam ||
gūḍhocchvasān na nas tatra hutāśaḥ saṃpradhakṣyati ||
vasato 'tra yathā cāsmān na budhyeta purocanaḥ ||
pauro vāpi janaḥ kaś cit tathā kāryam atandritaiḥ ||
"We, accustomed to hunting, will roam this land, and so the routes for flight will become known to us; and we will build an underground passage this very day, well concealed, with a hidden air-vent — there the fire will not consume us. And we shall so act that, while we live here, neither Purochana nor anyone among the citizens will notice us — thus must we act, unwearied."

Here Yudhishthira's far-sighted resourcefulness shows itself. Significant is the combination of an innocent-seeming pretext (hunting) with a secret purpose (scouting escape routes): the wise conceal their preparations for rescue behind a harmless occupation. Significant too is the construction of the tunnel "with a hidden air-vent": foresight extends even to small details, for life depends on them. Here it is seen that trust in providence does not do away with reasoned action: the righteous pray and labor at once, doing all that is possible and entrusting the rest to God. Significant also is the word "unwearied" (atandritaiḥ): salvation demands vigilance and labor, not idle waiting for a miracle. Thus the scripture presents a model of conduct in adversity: sober foresight, secret preparation, unremitting diligence — and under their cover the brothers will survive the fire, turning the enemy's plot into his own disgrace.
