तौ तु लब्धवरौ दृष्ट्वा कृतकामौ महासुरौ ॥
सर्वः सुहृज्जनस् ताभ्यां प्रमोदम् उपजग्मिवान् ॥
ततस् तौ तु जटा हित्वा मौलिनौ संबभूवतुः ॥
महार्हाभरणोपेतौ विरजोम्बरधारिणौ ॥
अकालकौमुदीं चैव चक्रतुः सार्वकामिकीम् ॥
दैत्येन्द्रौ परमप्रीतौ तयोश् चैव सुहृज्जनः ॥
tau tu labdhavarau dṛṣṭvā kṛtakāmau mahāsurau ||
sarvaḥ suhṛjjanas tābhyāṃ pramodam upajagmivān ||
tatas tau tu jaṭā hitvā maulinau saṃbabhūvatuḥ ||
mahārhābharaṇopetau virajombaradhāriṇau ||
akālakaumudīṃ caiva cakratuḥ sārvakāmikīm ||
daityendrau paramaprītau tayoś caiva suhṛjjanaḥ ||
"Seeing those great asuras who had obtained their boons, the whole company of their friends rejoiced together with them; then they, casting off their matted locks, became crowned with diadems, adorned with precious ornaments, wearing dustless garments; and those lords of the daityas and their friends held an untimely festival of the full moon, granting all desires."

Here austerity is at once followed by idleness and indulgence. It is telling that, no sooner having abandoned tapas, the brothers plunge into luxury and feasting: what was gained, not turned to good, becomes an occasion for self-indulgence. Here is the lesson: the fruit of unrighteous austerity is not purification but dissipation. Thus the scripture shows asceticism giving way to revelry; and after excess, ruin will follow.
