मन्दपालेन यूयं हि मम पूर्वं निवेदिताः ॥
वर्जयेः पुत्रकान् मह्यं दहन् दावम् इति स्म ह ॥
यच् च तद् वचनं तस्य त्वया यच् चेह भाषितम् ॥
उभयं मे गरीयस् तद् ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥
भृशं प्रीतो ऽस्मि भद्रं ते ब्रह्मन् स्तोत्रेण ते विभो ॥
mandapālena yūyaṃ hi mama pūrvaṃ niveditāḥ ||
varjayeḥ putrakān mahyaṃ dahan dāvam iti sma ha ||
yac ca tad vacanaṃ tasya tvayā yac ceha bhāṣitam ||
ubhayaṃ me garīyas tad brūhi kiṃ karavāṇi te ||
bhṛśaṃ prīto 'smi bhadraṃ te brahman stotreṇa te vibho ||
"For you were entrusted to me before by Mandapala: 'Spare my little sons when you burn the forest' -- so he said; and both his word and what you have said here weigh equally with me; tell me, what shall I do for you? I am greatly pleased, good fortune to you, O brahmin, by your praise, O lord."

Here the god is faithful to his given word and moved by praise. It is significant that Agni remembers his promise to Mandapala and honors it as much as the children's hymn: the faithful do not forget a vow. It is significant too that praise (stotra) inclined the god to mercy. Faithfulness to one's word and the power of praise both lead to good. Thus scripture reveals Agni's mercy -- and he offers the fledglings a gift.
