तद् भीमम् उत्सार्य जनं युद्धम् आसीद् उपह्वरे ॥
बलिनोः संयुगे राजन् वृत्रवासवयोर् इव ॥
प्रकर्षणाकर्षणाभ्याम् अभ्याकर्षविकर्षणैः ॥
आकर्षेतां तथान्योन्यं जानुभिश् चाभिजघ्नतुः ॥

अनुवाद
Having pushed back the crowd, their fearsome battle was fought in an open space — a clash of two strong men, O king, like that of Vritra and Vasava [Indra]. By pulling and dragging, by wrenching this way and that, they hauled each other about and struck with their knees.

The comparison to the battle of Indra and Vritra raises the duel above the earth: this is not merely a struggle of two kings, but a clash of order with the one who trampled it. It is significant that for this fight 'the crowd is pushed back' — righteous combat is waged openly, in the open space, not in hiding. The verse teaches that even the greatest of confrontations is carried out for the sake of protecting the many: the freeing of kings who languished for another's pride.
