Having thus spoken to them all, the consecrated eldest Pandava at once duly appointed each to their offices. Over food and provisions he set Duhshasana, and for the reception of brahmins he named Ashvatthaman. For the honoring of kings he appointed Sanjaya; for overseeing what was done and left undone — the most wise Bhishma and Drona. For overseeing gold, minted gold, and jewels, and for the distribution of gifts, the king appointed Kripa.

The great undertaking is ordered through distribution: to each his own office, according to his ability. It is telling that even the most honored duties are entrusted to elders from the opposing camp — Drona, Kripa, the Kauravas' own teachers: the righteous man does not divide people into his own and others' where the common good is at stake. The verse teaches that a leader's wisdom lies in the ability to entrust a task to one who is worthy, without fearing that the glory will be shared. Coordinated labor of many, each in his place, is an image of the world order itself; and a king who knows how to distribute tasks has already half-accomplished what he set out to do.
