A word that would bring another to his senses only hardens Shishupala further: instead of reflection comes fresh abuse. It is significant that the one just described as clouded of mind immediately confirms this description by his own behavior — hearing the truth, he answers with rudeness. The verse teaches that for a blinded heart even a saving word becomes an occasion for further insolence: where the humble would hear a warning, the proud hear a challenge. And thus the doomed man himself, step by step, proves the verdict upon himself — for persisting in abuse after a clear word is no longer ignorance but hardened obstinacy leading to the end.
