जानीमहे देवितं सौबलस्य; वेद द्यूते निकृतिं पार्वतीयः ॥
यतः प्राप्तः शकुनिस् तत्र यातु; मायायोधी भारत पार्वतीयः ॥

Vidura calls things by their names: Shakuni is ‘one who fights by guile,’ and his place is back where he came from. The fearlessness of the truth-teller is telling: he does not conceal the cheat's name and demands his removal. The verse teaches that peace is preserved by removing the sower of discord: one schemer is enough to set kinsmen against each other, and his banishment is the measure of salvation. Vidura has exhausted every form of exhortation — from parables and precepts to the blunt ‘drive the deceiver out’; he has done all that lies within an honest counselor's power. What remains is Dhritarashtra's choice. But it is bitter that the one direct counsel — the only effective one — will be rejected along with the rest; and the deceiver will remain, because his deceit pleases the one who listens.
