[Duryodhana:] "You boast only in another's glory, always secretly reviling the Dhartarashtras; we know, Vidura, whose favorite you are; you despise us as if we were children. A man partial to another is easily recognized: he applies blame and praise unevenly; your tongue, mind, and heart betray you, and still more the contrariness of your mind. You are like a serpent nurtured in one's lap, and like a cat, you destroy your own feeder; yet they say there is no sin worse than betraying one's master — why then, Kshattri, do you not fear that sin?"

Duryodhana repays truth with abuse, calling a faithful counselor a serpent and an ungrateful cat. It is telling that he hurls the charge of betrayal at the one man who remains loyal: projection is the standing weapon of the wrongdoer, who ascribes his own vice to others. The verse teaches how often the one rebuked blames the rebuker for the very fault he himself bears: Duryodhana, who is destroying his own family, calls Vidura — his rescuer — a traitor. And "the slaying of one's master" is a sin borne not by the counselor but by the one who rejects the saving word. Whoever answers truth with abuse testifies against himself; rage at the physician is the surest sign that the patient is beyond cure.
