अव्याधिजं कटुकं तीक्ष्णम् उष्णं; यशोमुषं परुषं पूतिगन्धि ॥
सतां पेयं यन् न पिबन्त्य् असन्तो; मन्युं महाराज पिब प्रशाम्य ॥
वैचित्रवीर्यस्य यशो धनं च; वाञ्छाम्य् अहं सहपुत्रस्य शश्वत् ॥
यथा तथा वो ऽस्तु नमश् च वो ऽस्तु; ममापि च स्वस्ति दिशन्तु विप्राः ॥
आशीविषान् नेत्रविषान् कोपयेन् न तु पण्डितः ॥
एवं ते ऽहं वदामीदं प्रयतः कुरुनन्दन ॥

यशो-मुषं परुषं पूति-गन्धिyaśo-muṣaṃ paruṣaṃ pūti-gandhistealing one's fame, harsh, foul-smelling —
सतां पेयं यन् न पिबन्त्य् असन्तोsatāṃ peyaṃ yan na pibanty asanto[the drink called] anger, which the good drink and the wicked do not —
मन्युं महाराज पिब प्रशाम्यmanyuṃ mahārāja piba praśāmyadrink this anger, O great king, and be at peace;
वैचित्रवीर्यस्य यशो धनं चvaicitravīryasya yaśo dhanaṃ cathe fame and wealth of the son of Vichitravirya [Dhritarashtra]
वाञ्छाम्य् अहं सह-पुत्रस्य शश्वत्vāñchāmy ahaṃ saha-putrasya śaśvattogether with his sons, I desire always;
यथा तथा वो ऽस्तु नमश् च वो ऽस्तुyathā tathā vo 'stu namaś ca vo 'stuwhatever may be, may good come to you, and homage to you;
ममापि च स्वस्ति दिशन्तु विप्राःmamāpi ca svasti diśantu viprāḥand to me too may the brahmins grant good fortune;
आशीविषान् नेत्र-विषान् कोपयेन् न तु पण्डितःāśīviṣān netra-viṣān kopayen na tu paṇḍitaḥa wise man would not enrage serpents whose poison is in their gaze;
एवं ते ऽहं वदामि इदं प्रयतः कुरुनन्दनevaṃ te 'haṃ vadāmi idaṃ prayataḥ kurunandanathus, reverently, I say this to you, O Kurunandana."

अनुवाद

[Vidura:] "Anger — bitter, sharp, burning, robbing one of fame, harsh, foul-smelling, yet a drink not born of disease, which the good drink and the wicked do not — drink it, O great king, and be at peace. I always desire the fame and wealth of the son of Vichitravirya together with his sons; whatever becomes of me, may good come to you, and homage to you; and to me too may the brahmins grant good fortune. A wise man would not provoke serpents whose poison lies in their gaze; so, reverently, I say this to you, O Kurunandana."
