With her hair disheveled, her garment fallen half away, roughly shaken by Duhshasana, ashamed and burning with indignation, Krishna quietly spoke this word: "These men in the assembly are learned in the shastras, performers of rites, all equal to Indra; some stand in the place of gurus, and all are themselves gurus; before them I dare not stand thus. Cruel of deed, ignoble in conduct, do not strip me bare, do not drag me; your [Pandava] princes would not endure this, even if the gods with Indra were your helpers."

Even in her violation Draupadi thinks of shame — not her own fear, but propriety before the elders: "before them I dare not stand thus." Her dignity here is telling: dragged as she is, she still guards her modesty and appeals not to pity but to the decorum of the assembly. The verse teaches that nobility does not abandon the righteous even in humiliation: the body can be dragged, but not one's dignity. And the charge of "ignoble conduct" is precise: it is not she who is degraded by her own shame, but he by his shamelessness. Whoever keeps modesty and forbearance under violence is exalted; whoever commits the violence debases himself. The violated one remains a queen; the violator becomes a slave to his own baseness.
