तच् छ्रुत्वा पाण्डवाः सर्वे स्वानि वासांसि भारत ॥
अवकीर्योत्तरीयाणि सभायां समुपाविशन् ॥
ततो दुःशासनो राजन् द्रौपद्या वसनं बलात् ॥
सभामध्ये समाक्षिप्य व्यपक्रष्टुं प्रचक्रमे ॥
आकृष्यमाणे वसने द्रौपद्यास् तु विशां पते ॥
तद्रूपम् अपरं वस्त्रं प्रादुरासीद् अनेकशः ॥
ततो हलहलाशब्दस् तत्रासीद् घोरनिस्वनः ॥
तद् अद्भुततमं लोके वीक्ष्य सर्वमहीक्षिताम् ॥
tac chrutvā pāṇḍavāḥ sarve svāni vāsāṃsi bhārata ||
avakīryottarīyāṇi sabhāyāṃ samupāviśan ||
tato duḥśāsano rājan draupadyā vasanaṃ balāt ||
sabhāmadhye samākṣipya vyapakraṣṭuṃ pracakrame ||
ākṛṣyamāṇe vasane draupadyās tu viśāṃ pate ||
tadrūpam aparaṃ vastraṃ prādurāsīd anekaśaḥ ||
tato halahalāśabdas tatrāsīd ghoranisvanaḥ ||
tad adbhutatamaṃ loke vīkṣya sarvamahīkṣitām ||
Hearing this, all the Pandavas took off their own garments and, casting aside their upper robes, sat down in the assembly, O Bharata. Then Duhshasana, O king, seizing Draupadi's garment by force in the midst of the assembly, began to tear it off. But as one garment was drawn away, another of the same kind appeared — again and again, without number. And then there arose the terrible clamor of "halahala" at the sight of this most wondrous marvel in the world, witnessed by all the rulers of the earth.

Here the unseen answers the cry of the defenseless: the hand that reaches for shame cannot attain it, for the garment torn away by force is replenished without end. This is the manifest act of Hari, to whom she called out: where human protection runs dry, the Protector does not, and the garment of His covering is boundless, as He Himself is. It is significant that the miracle unfolds in silence, without thunder or a manifest form — the Lord guards His devotee unseen, and the very silence of the miracle exposes the noisy impotence of evil. The verse teaches that one who has surrendered to the Supreme does not remain naked before the world: earthly abandonment is met by heavenly fullness, and helplessness entrusted to Hari becomes unconquerable.
