वासुदेव उवाचvāsudeva uvācaVasudeva said
एवं ब्रुवति सूते तु तदा मकरकेतुमान्evaṃ bruvati sūte tu tadā makaraketumānwhen the suta spoke thus, then the one bearing the makara banner
उवाच सूतं कौरव्य निवर्तय रथं पुनःuvāca sūtaṃ kauravya nivartaya rathaṃ punaḥsaid to the charioteer, O Kauravya: turn the chariot back again
दारुकात्मज मा एवम् त्वं पुनः कार्षीः कथं चनdārukātmaja mā evam tvaṃ punaḥ kārṣīḥ kathaṃ canason of Daruka, never do this again
व्यपयानं रणात् सौते जीवतः मम कर्हि चित्vyapayānaṃ raṇāt saute jīvataḥ mama karhi citdo not carry me away from battle, O suta, as long as I live
न स वृष्णिकुले जातः यः वै त्यजति संगरम्na sa vṛṣṇikule jātaḥ yaḥ vai tyajati saṃgaramnot born in the Vrishni line is he who abandons the fight
यः वा निपतितं हन्ति तव अस्मि इति च वादिनम्yaḥ vā nipatitaṃ hanti tava asmi iti ca vādinamor who kills one who has fallen, or one who says: I am yours

धर्मज्ञः च असि वृष्णीनाम् आहवेषु अपि दारुकेdharmajñaḥ ca asi vṛṣṇīnām āhaveṣu api dārukeand you know the dharma of the Vrishnis in battles too, O Daruki
स जानन् चरितं कृत्स्नं वृष्णीनां पृतनामुखेsa jānan caritaṃ kṛtsnaṃ vṛṣṇīnāṃ pṛtanāmukheknowing the whole conduct of the Vrishnis at the head of the army
अपयानं पुनः सौते मा एवम् कार्षीः कथं चनapayānaṃ punaḥ saute mā evam kārṣīḥ kathaṃ cananever again, O suta, make such a retreat
अपयातं हतं पृष्ठे भीतं रणपलायिनम्apayātaṃ hataṃ pṛṣṭhe bhītaṃ raṇapalāyinamone who has fled, struck in the back, afraid, running from battle
