Dhaumya said: 'Now hear, O Bharata, of the sacred fords of the southern quarter, told in the fullness of my knowledge, O Bharata. In that quarter, it is said, flows the blessed river Godavari, rich in groves and waters, gracious, hallowed by the lives of ascetics. There too are the Venna and the Bhimarathi, two rivers that carry away the fear of sin, amid deer and birds and the dwellings of hermits. There is the sacred Payoshni of the royal sage Nriga, with lovely fords and abundant waters, served by the twice-born. Of it the great yogi Markandeya, of mighty austerity, once sang an ancient verse concerning Nriga, the sacrificer, lord of the earth — a verse, as we have heard, testifying to the very truth: when Nriga performed his sacrifice, Indra grew drunk on the soma, and the twice-born on the sacrificial gifts. There is the sacred forest of Matharas, rich in roots and fruits, and, O best of the Bharatas, the sacrificial post on the mountain by the Varuna-srotas, and, on its northern side by the Prevani, the sacred hermitage of Kanva. The forests of the ascetics have thus been told as they are heard in tradition. There, O dear one, is the altar of the great-souled Jamadagni at Shurparaka, and the lovely Pashana-tirtha, and Purashchandra, O Bharata. Among mortals is famed the Ashoka-tirtha, rich in hermitages, O son of Kunti, and the Agastya-tirtha among the Pandyas, and Varuna, O Yudhishthira. The sacred Kumaris, too, are spoken of among the Pandyas, O bull among men. And now, son of Kunti, I shall tell of the Tamraparni — hear of it. There, in the hermitage where the gods performed great austerities, longing for a mighty boon, is the place renowned in the three worlds as Gokarna. There is a lake, cool of water, abundant, sacred and auspicious, O dear one, most hard of access for men whose souls are unsubdued. There too, rich in grass, soma and sacred fire, abundant in fruit and roots, is the sacred hermitage of Agastya's disciple, on the Mountain of the Assembly of the Gods. There is the Vaidurya mountain, splendid, made of gems and auspicious, and the hermitage of Agastya himself, rich in roots, fruits and water.'

For Dhaumya, the south is bound to the power of austerity: its rivers, mountains and hermitages show that purification demands not only bathing but a disciplined life.
