Vaishampayana said: "Then the king, generous in gifts, the son of Kunti, set out further, came to the ashram of Agastya, and stayed at Durjaya. There the best of speakers asked Lomasha: 'Why did Agastya subdue Vatapi here? What was the power of this daitya, this destroyer of men, and for what reason did the wrath of great Agastya arise?' Lomasha said: 'Once, joy of the Kurus, in the city of Manimati there lived a daitya named Ilvala, and Vatapi was his younger brother. This son of Diti said to an ascetic brahmin: "Let the blessed one grant me a single son equal to Indra." The brahmin did not grant him a son like Vasava, and the asura grew greatly enraged at him. By his word Ilvala could summon back one who had already gone to the abode of Vaivasvata, and that one would take on a body again and appear alive. So he would turn Vatapi into a goat, cook him well, feed him to the brahmin, and then call him back again. Then the great asura Vatapi, laughing, would tear open the brahmin's side and come out. Thus the evil-hearted daitya Ilvala fed brahmins and killed them again and again.'"

Vatapi and Ilvala pervert the very law of hospitality: the meal that should be sacred becomes an instrument of murder. Agastya's intervention will therefore be a restoration of dharma.
