"At that same time the blessed Agastya saw his ancestors: they were hanging in a pit, head-down. He asked them: 'For what reason do you dwell here?' The knowers of the sacred word answered: 'For the sake of offspring.' They told him: 'We are your own ancestors; we have fallen into this pit and hang here, longing for the birth of a descendant. If you beget the finest offspring of Agastya, there will be release from hell for us, and you will attain your goal through a son.' The radiant sage, devoted to truth and dharma, said: 'I will fulfill your wish, ancestors; let the fever of your minds depart.' Then, pondering how to continue the line, the blessed seer found no woman equal to himself for begetting offspring. So, gathering the finest limbs of one creature and another and composing from limbs like theirs, he fashioned a supremely beautiful woman. This woman, created for his own purpose, the great ascetic gave to the king of Vidarbha, who was pining with desire for a child. There she was born, lovely, like a flash of lightning, shining in body, and grew up with a blessed face. As soon as she was born, the king of Vidarbha joyfully announced it to the twice-born, O Bharata. All the brahmins welcomed her, and the twice-born gave her the name Lopamudra. She grew quickly, bearing the highest beauty, like a lotus in water, like the fair tongue of a flame. A hundred adorned maidens and a hundred maidservants attended her obediently. Surrounded by a hundred maidservants and a hundred maidens, the radiant maiden sat like Rohini in the sky. But when she reached youth, no man chose her, though she was endowed with good character and conduct: all feared the great sage. The truthful maiden surpassed even the apsarases in beauty and pleased her father by her character, and her kin by her conduct likewise. Seeing the young daughter of Vidarbha so accomplished, her father began to think in his mind: to whom shall I give my daughter?'"

The birth of Lopamudra joins duty to one's ancestors with extraordinary beauty. Yet beauty is not shown here as an ornament of the story: it must enter dharma and become part of a responsible choice.
