Lomasha said: "When Agastya decided that she was fit for the life of a householder, he went to the king of Vidarbha and said: 'O king, my mind inclines toward marriage for the sake of a son. I ask you, lord of the earth: give me Lopamudra.' Hearing this from the sage, the king lost his composure. He could not refuse, yet did not wish to give her away. Then he went to his wife and said: 'This great seer is mighty; if angered, he will burn us with the fire of his curse.' Seeing her father and mother so distressed, Lopamudra came to them at the right moment and said: 'Lord of the earth, do not suffer on my account. Give me to Agastya, father, and by giving me save yourself.' At his daughter's word the king duly gave Lopamudra to the great Agastya. Having received his wife, Agastya said to her: 'Give up these costly garments and ornaments.' Then the woman of lovely thighs and wide eyes gave up her fine, beautiful, costly garments; she took up rags, bark, and skins, and began to follow the same vow as her husband. Coming to Gangadvara, the blessed, foremost of seers took up severe austerity together with his obedient wife. She served her husband with love and reverence, and lord Agastya cherished deep joy in his wife."

Lopamudra is not passive: she herself makes the decision, saving her parents from their fear. Her obedience is not weakness but freely chosen dharma.
