Lomasha said: 'Listen how the mighty Rishyashringa was born, son of the brahmarishi Vibhandaka, illumined by austerity, true, of unfailing power, radiant as Prajapati. By a great lake, Kashyapa, standing in austerity, grew weary after a long time; this sage, honored by the divine seers, upon seeing the apsara Urvashi, released his seed as he touched the water. A thirsty doe then drank it together with the water and became pregnant, O king, by the inescapability of seed, by the law of fate, and by divine ordinance. In that doe was born his son, the great sage Rishyashringa, ever devoted to austerity, and he grew up right there in the forest. On the head of that great soul was the horn of an antelope, O king; therefore he then became known as Rishyashringa. He had never before seen another human being besides his father; therefore his mind, O king, always dwelt in chastity.'

Rishyashringa's birth is unusual, but the point of the story is not the wonder of his conception. His strength grows out of the complete purity of a mind that does not yet know worldly cunning.
