'His well-arranged hair was parted in two and lay beautifully upon his forehead, and his ears were covered as if with colorful circles. With his right hand he struck the ground with a round, colorful fruit; upon reaching the ground, it bounced high again and again in a wondrous way. Having struck it, he himself would spin, like a tree swayed by the wind. Seeing him, father, I felt supreme love and joy, as though toward a son of the immortals. He embraced my body, took hold of me by the hair, bent his face down and, pressing his face to mine, made a sound; from this a rapture was born in me. He did not think much of the padya-water and these fruits that I had brought. "Such is my vow," he told me, and gave me other, new fruits. I tasted them: my own fruits do not equal them in taste; their skin is not like that of these, and their pulp is different. He gave me waters of extraordinary taste to drink, noble in form; when I drank them, an even greater joy arose in me, and the earth seemed to sway. These colorful, fragrant garlands, entwined with ribbons, he scattered here and went off to his hermitage, radiant with austerity. Because of his departure I have lost my composure; my body feels as if it is burning. I wish to go to him quickly and be with him always. I will go to him indeed, father. What is his vow called? I wish to practice it together with him, as that mighty ascetic performs his austerity.'

Desire enters under the guise of a new vow. This is a subtle moment: a person may call an attraction by a spiritual name when he does not yet know how to discern the movement within.
