Ashtavakra said: "By this man, as we have heard, brahmins defeated in debate were drowned in water. Let Bandi himself now receive those same laws: seize him and drown him in the water." Bandi said: "I am the son of King Varuna. He holds there a twelve-year sattra; for a term equal to your sacrifice, Janaka, I sent the finest twice-born there for this purpose. All of them went to witness Varuna's sacrifice, and now they are returning here again. I honor the venerable Ashtavakra, because of whom I shall meet my father." Ashtavakra said: "These vipras were drowned in the ocean's waters, defeated in speech and knowledge. But through wisdom they raised up speech once more, as the good choose the right word. The fire Jatavedas, though burning the homes of the good, does not consume them with its heat; so the good choose their speech, when poor children speak. Sleshmataki, your luster spent, do you hear? Or do praises intoxicate you? Are you, Janaka, like an elephant being goaded, that you do not hear this speech of mine?" Janaka said: "I hear your speech, divine in form; and you yourself are of a directly divine form, not human. Since you defeated Bandi in debate, today you have obtained what you desired: Bandi is released to you." Ashtavakra said: "While Bandi lives, he is of no use to me at all, O king. If his father is Varuna, drown him in the pool." Bandi said: "I am the son of King Varuna, and I have no fear of being drowned in water. This very moment Ashtavakra shall see his long-lost father Kahoda." Lomasha said: "Then all those vipras, honored by the great-souled Varuna, rose up near Janaka." Kahoda said: "It is for this very reason, Janaka, that people desire sons: what I myself was unable to do, my son has done. From the weak is born the strong, from the boy the wise, from the ignorant the learned son, Janaka." Bandi said: "May Antaka himself, with a sharpened axe, carry off the heads of your enemies in battle, O king; may good come to you. Here the great uktha is sung, and the finest sama; here in the sattra soma is rightly drunk. At Janaka's sacrifice the gods themselves joyfully received the pure portions." Lomasha said: "When all those vipras had risen, grown even more radiant, Bandi, with King Janaka's permission, entered the waters of the ocean. Ashtavakra, having honored his father and having been duly honored by those brahmins, having defeated Bandi, returned together with his uncle to that excellent hermitage. Here, Kaunteya, together with your brothers, having dwelt happily and joyfully honored along with the vipras, pure in deeds and single-minded in devotion, you shall visit other holy places together with me, O Ajamidha."

The resolution recasts the meaning of the earlier cruelty: Bandi was not destroying the brahmins but sending them on to Varuna's sacrifice. Yet Ashtavakra still restores order: knowledge brings back the father, releases a hidden truth, and purifies the assembly.
