'How is it that she who deserves guarded chambers and a well-spread bed now lies fallen upon the ground, this woman of beautiful complexion, deserving of happiness? How have the tender feet and lotus-bright face of this most worthy woman turned dark today because of me? What have I, senseless, done out of love for dicing, taking Krishna and wandering through a forest full of beasts? "Panchali will attain happiness, gaining the Pandavas as husbands" -- with this thought her father, King Drupada, gave us the long-eyed one. But she has attained none of this; worn out by hardship and grief, she lies on the ground because of my sinful deeds.' As Dharmaraja Yudhishthira lamented thus, Dhaumya and all the best of the twice-born arrived there. They comforted her, honored her with blessings, recited mantras that destroy rakshasas, and performed rites. As the great sages recited mantras for her peace, and the Pandavas again and again touched her with cool hands, and a cool breeze mingled with moisture blew upon her, Panchali, finding relief, gradually regained her senses. Then they laid poor Krishna, the ascetic woman, to rest upon a bed of deerskin, once she had come to herself. The two sons of Madri, with their calloused hands, slowly massaged her red, auspiciously marked feet. Dharmaraja Yudhishthira also comforted her and said this to Bhimasena: "Bhima, there are many mountains ahead, rugged, snowy, and hard to cross. How, then, will Krishna, mighty-armed one, make her way through them?"'

Yudhishthira does not excuse himself: he names his own action as the root of the misfortune. Such honesty matters, because care without an acknowledgment of guilt easily becomes shallow.
