Vrikodara, swift as the wind, made the earth tremble with his steps, like a thunderbolt striking the peaks; he terrified herds of elephants. Immensely strong, he crushed lions and tigers, tore up great trees, knocked them down with his chest, and forcefully dragged creepers and shoots, like an elephant wishing to climb ever higher toward a mountain peak, and he roared exceedingly loud, like a cloud with lightning. At his terrible sound and at the twang of his bow, herds of beasts fled in fear on every side. Then the mighty-armed one saw on the slopes of Gandhamadana a beautiful banana grove, stretching over many yojanas. The immensely strong one swiftly approached it, wishing to shake it, breaking various trees like a rushing elephant. Bhima, the foremost of the strong, forcefully tore up banana trunks, tall as many palm trees, and hurled them in every direction. Then many great creatures began to draw near him — herds of rurus and elephants, as well as buffaloes that dwell by the water. Enraged lions and tigers rushed at Bhimasena, jaws agape, most fierce, with a terrible roar. Then the son of Vayu, enraged and relying on the strength of his own arms, struck elephant with elephant, lion with lion, while the mighty Pandava felled others with blows of his palms. Struck down by Bhima, the lions, tigers and hyenas all crawled away in fear, voiding dung and urine. Then the immensely strong, glorious son of Pandu swiftly entered the forest, filling the directions with sound. At this fearsome sound, at the cry of Bhimasena, all the beasts and birds that were deep within the forest trembled. Suddenly hearing this din raised by the beasts and birds, thousands of water birds with wet wings rose up. Watching these water birds, the foremost of the Bharatas followed them and beheld a beautiful, vast lake. This lake, unshaken, seemed to fan itself with golden banana groves, swayed by a gentle breeze and stretching along its shores. Swiftly entering the lake, full of lotuses and blue lotuses, the mighty and wild Bhima sported in it like a huge elephant. Having played there a long while, he emerged, boundlessly radiant. Then he swiftly entered that forest with its many trees and blew a resounding blast on his conch with all his breath. At the sound of his conch, at the cry of Bhimasena, and at the terrible noise of his arms, the mountain's caves seemed to roar.'

This passage shows Bhima in the full force of his elemental might, yet nature itself answers with fear. Before his meeting with Hanuman, his strength needs not to grow, but to be tempered.
