Dharmavyadha said: "In people, the mind first acts for the sake of knowledge. Having reached its object, it attaches itself to desire and anger. For this end a man strives, undertakes great actions, and grows accustomed to desired forms and scents. From this attachment is born, then hatred; then greed and delusion. In one who is overcome by greed and struck down by attachment and hatred, understanding is not born in dharma; he performs dharma under pretense, for the sake of gain. When wealth is gained through deceit, his mind delights in it and then desires sin. Even when restrained by friends and by the wise, he answers with words tied to the shruti, and screens himself with scripture. His adharma grows in three forms: he thinks sin, speaks it, and does it. Thus good qualities vanish, sinners become his friends, and he obtains suffering here and is destroyed hereafter. But one who through wisdom sees these faults beforehand, who is skilled in happiness and sorrow and serves the good, through good endeavor gives birth to understanding in the dharmas."

Dharmavyadha traces the inner chain of a fall: object, desire, attachment, greed, the religious mask, and sin. Breaking the chain begins with a sober seeing of the fault before it becomes habit.
