अनुवाद

Janamejaya said: 'Living thus in the forest, their bodies wasted by cold, heat, wind, and sun, after reaching that lake and the sacred forest, what did the best of men, the Pārthas, do next?' Vaishampayana answered: 'Having reached that lake, the sons of Pandu released their attendants, arranged their affairs, and themselves wandered through delightful forests, mountains, and riverside regions. While these heroes dwelt in the forest, ancient knowers of the Veda, rich in austerity and devoted to sacred study, came to them; and the best of men honored them. Once a brahmin skilled in storytelling happened to visit the Kauravas, and afterward came to King Vaichitravirya. Received with honor and seated by the aged king, at his request he began to tell of the son of Dharma, the son of the Wind, the son of Indra, and the twins — gaunt, wasted by wind and sun, having entered the mouth of grievous suffering — and of Krishna, seemingly defenseless though guarded by heroes, burdened with many hardships. Hearing his account, King Vaichitravirya was consumed by pity. Learning that the sons and grandsons of kings stood in the forest, having entered the river of suffering, he — his inmost soul struck down by wretchedness, sighing and weeping — with difficulty gathered his composure and spoke, reflecting that all of this had come about through himself.'
