Seeing that all the sons of Dhritarashtra were fleeing with their backs turned, the hero Vaikartana did not retreat in that hour. Noticing the great host of the Gandharvas advancing, Radheya checked it with a great rain of arrows. With kshurapras, sharp arrows, bhallas, vatsadantas and iron-tipped shafts, the charioteer's son, by reason of his swiftness, struck down the Gandharvas by the hundreds. This great warrior sheared off the heads of the Gandharvas and in an instant scattered the whole army of Chitrasena. But the Gandharvas, though slain by the wise charioteer's son, again returned by the hundreds and thousands. In an instant the earth seemed made entirely of Gandharvas, as Chitrasena's warriors rushed upon it with great force. Then King Duryodhana, Shakuni son of Subala, Duhshasana, Vikarna and the other sons of Dhritarashtra began to strike that army with their chariots, giving the cry of Garuda. They fought again, placing Karna in front, and with the great thunder of chariot wheels and the coursing of horses, wishing to protect Vaikartana, they checked the Gandharvas. Then all the Gandharvas closed with the Kauravas, and an exceedingly tumultuous battle began, one that made the hair stand on end. Weakened by arrows, the Gandharvas began to falter, and the Kauravas cried out on seeing the Gandharvas hard pressed."

Here Karna truly shows personal courage, but it serves a false cause. The epic does not erase the valor of an enemy -- it shows the tragic direction it is given.
