Vaishampayana said: "The gandharvas, adorned with golden garlands and equipped with divine weapons, surrounded the Pandavas on all sides, loosing blazing arrows. The four Pandava heroes and thousands of gandharvas clashed in battle; it was like a marvel. Just as the gandharvas had cut to pieces, by the hundreds, the chariots of Karna and of Dhritarashtra's son, so now the Pandavas began to do to their chariots. The tigers among men met the hundreds of oncoming gandharvas with many showers of arrows. The sky-going ones, showered with arrows from every side, could not approach the sons of Pandu. Seeing the gandharvas enraged, Arjuna took aim with divine, great weapons and began to loose them. Thousand upon thousand, the mighty Arjuna in battle sent the gandharvas to the abode of Yama with the fire-weapon. The great archer Bhima, foremost among the strong, likewise slew hundreds of gandharvas with sharp arrows. The sons of Madri too, fighting with formidable strength and standing in the forefront, slew enemies by the hundreds. When the gandharvas, struck by the great divine weapons, rose into the sky carrying off the sons of Dhritarashtra, Kunti's son Dhananjaya perceived this and surrounded them on all sides with a great net of arrows. Bound by the net of arrows like birds in a cage, they in fury rained maces, spears, and lances upon Arjuna. The master of great weapons repelled these showers of maces, spears, and swords, and struck the bodies of the gandharvas with broad-headed arrows. Falling heads, legs, and arms seemed like a rain of stones, and the enemy grew afraid. The gandharvas, being slain by the great Pandava, showered arrows from the sky upon him as he stood on the ground. But the radiant Savyasachin, subduer of foes, warded off their arrows with his weapons and struck the gandharvas. Arjuna loosed the sthunakarna, the indrajala, and also the saura weapon; the delight of the Kurus loosed the agneya and the saumya as well. Burned by the arrows of Kunti's son, the gandharvas fell into utter despair, like the daityas struck down by Shakra."

The battle reveals the full measure of the Pandavas as warriors: they are saving an enemy, yet they do it with the same resolve with which they would defend a friend.
