अजानतस् ते राधेय नाभ्यसूयाम्य् अहं वचः ॥
जानासि त्वं जिताञ् शत्रून् गन्धर्वांस् तेजसा मया ॥
आयोधितास् तु गन्धर्वाः सुचिरं सोदरैर् मम ॥
मया सह महाबाहो कृतश् चोभयतः क्षयः ॥
मायाधिकास् त्व् अयुध्यन्त यदा शूरा वियद्गताः ॥
तदा नो नसमं युद्धम् अभवत् सह खेचरैः ॥
पराजयं च प्राप्ताः स्म रणे बन्धनम् एव च ॥
सभृत्यामात्यपुत्राश् च सदारधनवाहनाः ॥
उच्चैर् आकाशमार्गेण ह्रियामस् तैः सुदुःखिताः ॥
अथ नः सैनिकाः के चिद् अमात्याश् च महारथान् ॥
उपगम्याब्रुवन् दीनाः पाण्डवाञ् शरणप्रदान् ॥
एष दुर्योधनो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रः सहानुजः ॥
सामात्यदारो ह्रियते गन्धर्वैर् दिवम् आस्थितैः ॥
तं मोक्षयत भद्रं वः सहदारं नराधिपम् ॥
परामर्शो मा भविष्यत् कुरुदारेषु सर्वशः ॥
एवम् उक्ते तु धर्मात्मा ज्येष्ठः पाण्डुसुतस् तदा ॥
प्रसाद्य सोदरान् सर्वान् आज्ञापयत मोक्षणे ॥
अथागम्य तम् उद्देशं पाण्डवाः पुरुषर्षभाः ॥
सान्त्वपूर्वम् अयाचन्त शक्ताः सन्तो महारथाः ॥
यदा चास्मान् न मुमुचुर् गन्धर्वाः सान्त्विता अपि ॥
ततो ऽर्जुनश् च भीमश् च यमजौ च बलोत्कटौ ॥
मुमुचुः शरवर्षाणि गन्धर्वान् प्रत्यनेकशः ॥
अथ सर्वे रणं मुक्त्वा प्रयाताः खचरा दिवम् ॥
अस्मान् एवाभिकर्षन्तो दीनान् मुदितमानसाः ॥
ततः समन्तात् पश्यामि शरजालेन वेष्टितम् ॥
अमानुषाणि चास्त्राणि प्रयुञ्जानं धनंजयम् ॥
समावृता दिशो दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवेन शितैः शरैः ॥
धनंजयसखात्मानं दर्शयाम् आस वै तदा ॥
चित्रसेनः पाण्डवेन समाश्लिष्य परंतपः ॥
कुशलं परिपप्रच्छ तैः पृष्टश् चाप्य् अनामयम् ॥
ते समेत्य तथान्योन्यं संनाहान् विप्रमुच्य च ॥
एकीभूतास् ततो वीरा गन्धर्वाः सह पाण्डवैः ॥

tato 'rjunaś ca bhīmaś ca yamajau ca balotkaṭau ||
mumucuḥ śaravarṣāṇi gandharvān pratyanekaśaḥ ||
atha sarve raṇaṃ muktvā prayātāḥ khacarā divam ||
asmān evābhikarṣanto dīnān muditamānasāḥ ||
tataḥ samantāt paśyāmi śarajālena veṣṭitam ||
amānuṣāṇi cāstrāṇi prayuñjānaṃ dhanaṃjayam ||
samāvṛtā diśo dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavena śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
dhanaṃjayasakhātmānaṃ darśayām āsa vai tadā ||
citrasenaḥ pāṇḍavena samāśliṣya paraṃtapaḥ ||
kuśalaṃ paripapraccha taiḥ pṛṣṭaś cāpy anāmayam ||
te sametya tathānyonyaṃ saṃnāhān vipramucya ca ||

Duryodhana, together with his brothers, servants, counselors, sons, wives, wealth, and chariots, was defeated, bound, and in great sorrow carried off along the lofty path of the sky. Some warriors and counselors came to the Pandavas, who grant refuge, and begged them to free Duryodhana and the wives. Dharmaraja placated his brothers and ordered their release. The Pandavas first asked peaceably, but when the gandharvas, even so placated, would not release the captives, Arjuna, Bhima, and the twins loosed a multitude of arrow-showers against them. The gandharvas, carrying off the captives, rose into the sky, but Dhananjaya surrounded them all with arrows and employed superhuman weapons (astras). Then Chitrasena, friend of Dhananjaya, revealed himself, embraced the Pandava, asked after his welfare, and Chitrasena and Dhananjaya honored one another in turn.

Duryodhana said: "Radheya, you spoke in ignorance, so I do not blame your words. You think the gandharvas were vanquished by my own strength. The gandharvas fought long against me and my brothers, and there was destruction on both sides. But when those heroes, masters of illusion, took to the sky and fought from there, our battle with the sky-rangers became unequal. We were defeated in battle and bound — I, my servants, counselors, sons, wives, wealth, and chariots. In great sorrow we were carried off along the lofty path of the sky. Then some of our warriors and counselors, humbled, approached the great charioteers, the Pandavas, who grant refuge, and said: 'Here is King Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, together with his younger brother, his counselors and wives, being carried off by gandharvas standing in the sky. Free this lord of men together with his wives — may it be well with you; let there be no violation whatsoever against any of the wives of the Kurus.' When this was said, the eldest son of Pandu, the righteous one, placated all his brothers and ordered our release. Coming to that place, the Pandavas, foremost among men, though strong and great charioteers, first asked for us peaceably. But when the gandharvas, even when placated, would not release us, Arjuna, Bhima, and the mighty twins let loose a multitude of showers of arrows against the gandharvas. All the sky-rangers, abandoning the battle, rose into the sky, joyfully carrying us off, humbled as we were. Then I saw myself surrounded on all sides by a net of arrows, and Dhananjaya wielding superhuman weapons. Seeing the directions covered by the Pandava's sharp arrows, Chitrasena, friend of Dhananjaya, revealed himself. Chitrasena embraced the Pandava and asked after his welfare, and they in turn asked him of his health. Then, laying aside their armor and coming together, the heroic gandharvas joined with the Pandavas, and Chitrasena and Dhananjaya honored one another."

भाष्य

This is the first time Duryodhana speaks the plain truth, without embellishment. But this admission gives rise not to humility, but to a new surge of proud despair.
