The freed king, approaching, bowed to Yudhishthira and to all the sages, ashamed. The compassionate king, Yudhishthira the son of Dharma, seeing Jayadratha seized by Savyasachin, said: 'Go free, you are not a slave. Never do such a thing again, anywhere. Lecher, shame upon you, base man with base companions. Who but you, vilest of men, would have done such a thing?' Knowing that the doer of this evil deed seemed to have lost his strength, the best of the Bharatas, the lord of men, took pity on him: 'May your mind grow in dharma, and do not turn your thoughts to adharma. With your horses, chariots, and footmen, go in peace, Jayadratha.' Addressed thus, ashamed, silent, and with downcast face, the suffering king set out for Gangadvara, O Bharata. Taking refuge in the god Virupaksha, the husband of Uma, he performed great austerities; Vrishadhvaja was pleased with him. The Three-eyed One, pleased, himself accepted his offering and granted him a boon; hear what he asked for. The king said to the god: 'May I conquer in battle all five Pandavas together with their chariots.' The god answered: 'No. But you shall hold them back in battle, unconquerable and unslayable though they are, all except the mighty-armed Arjuna, unassailable even by the gods. He who is called the unconquered god, bearer of conch, discus, and mace, foremost among the masters of weapons, protects him — that is, Krishna.' After these words, the king returned to his own home, and the Pandavas at that time dwelt in that forest, Kamyaka.'

Shiva's boon is bounded by Krishna's presence. Jayadratha's future strength is real, but before the Lord's protection of Arjuna it has a limit.
