स पुत्रं निहतं दृष्ट्वा त्रासात् संभ्रान्तलोचनः ॥
रावणः शोकमोहार्तो वैदेहीं हन्तुम् उद्यतः ॥
अशोकवनिकास्थां तां रामदर्शनलालसाम् ॥
खड्गम् आदाय दुष्टात्मा जवेनाभिपपात ह ॥
तं दृष्ट्वा तस्य दुर्बुद्धेर् अविन्ध्यः पापनिश्चयम् ॥
शमयाम् आस संक्रुद्धं श्रूयतां येन हेतुना ॥
महाराज्ये स्थितो दीप्ते न स्त्रियं हन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
हतैवैषा यदा स्त्री च बन्धनस्था च ते गृहे ॥
न चैषा देहभेदेन हता स्याद् इति मे मतिः ॥
जहि भर्तारम् एवास्या हते तस्मिन् हता भवेत् ॥
न हि ते विक्रमे तुल्यः साक्षाद् अपि शतक्रतुः ॥
असकृद् धि त्वया सेन्द्रास् त्रासितास् त्रिदशा युधि ॥
एवं बहुविधैर् वाक्यैर् अविन्ध्यो रावणं तदा ॥
क्रुद्धं संशमयाम् आस जगृहे च स तद्वचः ॥
निर्याणे स मतिं कृत्वा निधायासिं क्षपाचरः ॥
आज्ञापयाम् आस तदा रथो मे कल्प्यताम् इति ॥

evaṃ bahuvidhair vākyair avindhyo rāvaṇaṃ tadā ||
kruddhaṃ saṃśamayām āsa jagṛhe ca sa tadvacaḥ ||
niryāṇe sa matiṃ kṛtvā nidhāyāsiṃ kṣapācaraḥ ||
ājñāpayām āsa tadā ratho me kalpyatām iti ||

अनुवाद

Seeing his son slain, Ravana, his eyes clouded with terror, overwhelmed by grief and delusion, wished to kill Vaidehi. Taking up his sword, the wicked one ran swiftly toward her in the Ashoka grove, where she longed to see Rama. Avindhya perceived his sinful intent and set about calming the enraged king: «You stand in a resplendent, great kingdom; you should not kill a woman. She is already as good as dead, for she is a woman and a captive in your house. But in my opinion, she will not be killed by the destruction of her body. Kill her husband instead: when he is slain, she will be slain.» With many such words Avindhya calmed Ravana. He accepted the counsel, set aside his sword, resolved to go out to battle, and ordered: «Let my chariot be made ready.»

भाष्य

Even in Lanka there is a voice that stops the worst violence. But Avindhya's counsel only delays Ravana's sin; without repentance, his grief turns into fresh aggression.
