राजोवाच
एहि सावित्रि गच्छ त्वम् अन्यं वरय शोभने ॥
तस्य दोषो महान् एको गुणान् आक्रम्य तिष्ठति ॥
यथा मे भगवान् आह नारदो देवसत्कृतः ॥
संवत्सरेण सो ऽल्पायुर् देहन्यासं करिष्यति ॥
सावित्र्य् उवाच
सकृद् अंशो निपतति सकृत् कन्या प्रदीयते ॥
सकृद् आह ददानीति त्रीण्य् एतानि सकृत् सकृत् ॥
दीर्घायुर् अथ वाल्पायुः सगुणो निर्गुणो ऽपि वा ॥
सकृद् वृतो मया भर्ता न द्वितीयं वृणोम्य् अहम् ॥
मनसा निश्चयं कृत्वा ततो वाचाभिधीयते ॥
क्रियते कर्मणा पश्चात् प्रमाणं मे मनस् ततः ॥
नारद उवाच
स्थिरा बुद्धिर् नरश्रेष्ठ सावित्र्या दुहितुस् तव ॥
नैषा चालयितुं शक्या धर्माद् अस्मात् कथं चन ॥
नान्यस्मिन् पुरुषे सन्ति ये सत्यवति वै गुणाः ॥
प्रदानम् एव तस्मान् मे रोचते दुहितुस् तव ॥
राजोवाच
अविचार्यम् एतद् उक्तं हि तथ्यं भगवता वचः ॥
करिष्याम्य् एतद् एवं च गुरुर् हि भगवान् मम ॥
नारद उवाच
अविघ्नम् अस्तु सावित्र्याः प्रदाने दुहितुस् तव ॥
साधयिष्यामहे तावत् सर्वेषां भद्रम् अस्तु वः ॥
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
एवम् उक्त्वा खम् उत्पत्य नारदस् त्रिदिवं गतः ॥
राजापि दुहितुः सर्वं वैवाहिकम् अकारयत् ॥

अनुवाद

The king said, "Come, Savitri, go and choose another, fair one. He has one great fault that outweighs his virtues: as Narada, honored by the gods, has told me, this short-lived man will lay down his body in a year." Savitri answered, "One's portion falls but once, a maiden is given but once, and the words 'I give' are spoken but once. A husband, long-lived or short-lived, with virtues or without them, has been chosen by me once; I will not choose a second. The decision is first made in the mind, then declared in speech, and afterward carried out in action; therefore my mind is my standard." Narada said, "Firm is the resolve of your daughter Savitri, best of men; it cannot in any way be shaken from this dharma. In no other man are found the qualities that are in Satyavan. Therefore it pleases me that your daughter be given to him alone." The king accepted Narada's word as true. Narada blessed the giving of Savitri and departed to heaven, and the king made ready everything for his daughter's wedding.

भाष्य

Savitri affirms the oneness of thought, word and deed. Her fidelity begins even before marriage: once her heart has seen the truth, she does not turn back from it.
