"Whoever, dwelling away from home, does not constantly long for his loved ones, and through hardship seeks happiness -- such a man may live at a king's court. Let him not dress the same as his master, nor laugh too loudly in his presence, nor disclose his counsel widely -- thus he will become dear to the king. While charged with a task, let him not touch any money at all: for one who takes what belongs to another meets with imprisonment or death. Whatever vehicle, garment, or ornament, or anything else the king gives, that alone he should always wear -- thus he will become still more beloved. Live out this year in this manner, dear ones, you who wish to conduct yourselves so, and then, once you have reached your own domain, you shall live as you please."

The final instruction returns the gaze to the goal: patience is not endless, it has a term. One year of discipline must preserve the possibility of future freedom.
