Vaishampayana said: 'Coming out of the city, the brave Matsyas, having arrayed their troops and ready to strike, met the Trigartas at sunset. The Trigartas and Matsyas, enraged, maddened with battle-lust, mighty and greedy for cows, roared at one another. Fearsome maddened elephants, driven on by goads and hooks, were mounted by skilled elephant-riders and village leaders. Their encounter was terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising, like the battle of gods and demons, as the sun was already sinking. Earthly dust rose so thick that nothing could be seen; birds, covered by the army's dust, fell to the ground. Because of the clashing arrows the sun was hidden, while the sky shone as if filled with fireflies. The gold-backed bows of the archers crossed one another as the heroes of the world shot to left and right. Chariots met chariots, foot soldiers met foot soldiers, horsemen met horsemen, and great elephants met great elephants. With swords, pattishas, lances, javelins, and tomaras, furious in battle, they slew one another. Heroes with arms like iron clubs, striking one another, could not make the brave turn their backs.'

The battle is shown as an eclipse of the world: dust blinds sight, arrows blot out the sun, and people can no longer see any measure. This is how the clash begins, in which greed for cows turns into destruction.
