वैशंपायन उवाच
एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे तत्र महावीर्यपराक्रमः ॥
आजगाम महासत्त्वः कृपः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥
अर्जुनं प्रति संयोद्धुं युद्धार्थी स महारथः ॥
तौ रथौ सूर्यसंकाशौ योत्स्यमानौ महाबलौ ॥
शारदाव् इव जीमूतौ व्यरोचेतां व्यवस्थितौ ॥
पार्थो ऽपि विश्रुतं लोके गाण्डीवं परमायुधम् ॥
विकृष्य चिक्षेप बहून् नाराचान् मर्मभेदिनः ॥
तान् अप्राप्ताञ् शितैर् बाणैर् नाराचान् रक्तभोजनान् ॥
कृपश् चिच्छेद पार्थस्य शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
ततः पार्थश् च संक्रुद्धश् चित्रान् मार्गान् प्रदर्शयन् ॥
दिशः संछादयन् बाणैः प्रदिशश् च महारथः ॥
एकच्छायम् इवाकाशं प्रकुर्वन् सर्वतः प्रभुः ॥
प्रच्छादयद् अमेयात्मा पार्थः शरशतैः कृपम् ॥
स शरैर् अर्पितः क्रुद्धः शितैर् अग्निशिखोपमैः ॥
तूर्णं शरसहस्रेण पार्थम् अप्रतिमौजसम् ॥
अर्पयित्वा महात्मानं ननाद समरे कृपः ॥

etasminn antare tatra mahāvīryaparākramaḥ ||
ājagāma mahāsattvaḥ kṛpaḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
arjunaṃ prati saṃyoddhuṃ yuddhārthī sa mahārathaḥ ||
tau rathau sūryasaṃkāśau yotsyamānau mahābalau ||
śāradāv iva jīmūtau vyarocetāṃ vyavasthitau ||
pārtho 'pi viśrutaṃ loke gāṇḍīvaṃ paramāyudham ||
vikṛṣya cikṣepa bahūn nārācān marmabhedinaḥ ||
tān aprāptāñ śitair bāṇair nārācān raktabhojanān ||
kṛpaś ciccheda pārthasya śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
tataḥ pārthaś ca saṃkruddhaś citrān mārgān pradarśayan ||
diśaḥ saṃchādayan bāṇaiḥ pradiśaś ca mahārathaḥ ||
ekacchāyam ivākāśaṃ prakurvan sarvataḥ prabhuḥ ||
pracchādayad ameyātmā pārthaḥ śaraśataiḥ kṛpam ||
sa śarair arpitaḥ kruddhaḥ śitair agniśikhopamaiḥ ||
tūrṇaṃ śarasahasreṇa pārtham apratimaujasam ||
arpayitvā mahātmānaṃ nanāda samare kṛpaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: ‘Then Kripa, the best of those who bear weapons, advanced with the wish to fight Arjuna. Their chariots, blazing like suns and resembling autumn clouds, drew close to one another. Dhananjaya drew the Gandiva and loosed a multitude of narachas, but Kripa, before they could reach their mark, cut them down by the hundred and by the thousand. Then Partha covered the quarters of the sky, and Kripa himself, with his arrows. Pierced, the son of Sharadvan did not retreat: he loosed a thousand arrows upon Arjuna and let out a great battle cry.’
