Virata said: "Women, cows, gold, and any other wealth need no protection from you, even should I choose to play." Kanka replied: "What use is the game to you, king of kings? It holds many faults, o giver of honor; therefore it should be shunned. You have heard or seen how the Pandava Yudhishthira, at play, lost his great and flourishing kingdom and his brothers who were like gods. Therefore the game does not please me. But if that is your wish, o king, let us play, if it pleases you." When the game had begun, the king of the Matsyas said to the Pandava: "Behold — my son in battle defeated such Kurus as these!" Then Dharmasuta Yudhishthira said to the king of the Matsyas: "How could he fail to conquer, whose charioteer is Brihannada?" Hearing this, the enraged king of the Matsyas said to the Pandava: "You compare a eunuch to my son, o brahmin-kinsman? You clearly do not know what may be said and what may not; surely you hold me in contempt. Why should my son not conquer all, led by Bhishma and Drona? Out of friendship for you, brahmin, I forgive this offense. But speak no more like this, if you wish to live." Yudhishthira said: "Where Drona is, and Bhishma, Drauni, Vaikartana, Kripa, Duryodhana, o best of kings, and the other great chariot-warriors — who else but Brihannada could fight against them, even were they surrounded by the hosts of the Maruts and by Shatakratu himself?"

Yudhishthira again defends the one who has offended him, but does so in a way Virata cannot accept. In this way the hidden life of the Pandavas holds, to the very last, on patience.
