Vaishampayana said: 'On the third day the five Pandava brothers, having bathed, dressed in white garments, their vow now fulfilled in due time, adorned with every ornament, and placing Yudhishthira before them, came into Virata's assembly. Shining, the great chariot-warriors took their seats upon the seats of earthly rulers, like fires upon their own altars. While they sat there, Virata, lord of the earth, entered the assembly to attend to matters of state. Seeing the glorious Pandavas blazing like fires, the king of the Matsyas said to Kanka, who sat there in godlike form, like the lord of the gods among the host of Maruts: "Were you not appointed by me as a dice-thrower and a member of the assembly? Why, then, adorned as you are, do you now sit upon the royal seat?" Hearing this speech of Virata, spoken in a spirit of jest, Arjuna, smiling, said to the king these words.'

The year in hiding has ended, and roles shift without violence. Those who served now take their true places, while Virata does not yet understand that he is looking at kings.
