Krishna said: 'These words are fitting for the chief of the Somaka line, and they serve the interest of the immeasurably mighty son of Pandu. Since we wish to pursue this course, it is without doubt our first duty; a man who acted otherwise would be a great fool. But our ties are equal to both the Kurus and the Pandavas, however these two sides may behave toward one another. Both you and we were brought here for the wedding. Now that the wedding has been celebrated, let us go home content. You are the eldest among kings, both in years and in learning; we are all like disciples to you here, without doubt.'

This passage (5.5.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace unfolds already against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key figures: Krishna, the Pandavas. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an embassy, fidelity to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
