Dhritarashtra said: 'They say, O Sanjaya, that the Pandavas have arrived at Upaplavya. Go and learn about them. You must greet Ajatashatru with these words: "By good fortune you have reached this town, having come out of the forest." And to all of them you must speak these words, O Sanjaya: "Are you well, having endured such a wearisome sojourn — you who deserved no such persecution?" At no time will they be at peace toward us, for though they were treated treacherously by their enemies, they remain righteous and good. Never, O Sanjaya, have I ever detected any falsehood in the Pandavas. It was by their own valor that they won all their prosperity, and yet they have always remained obedient to me. Though I have carefully examined their conduct, I have never been able to find in them a single fault for which we might reproach them. They always act mindful of virtue and wealth; they never yield to fondness for sensual pleasure, nor to cold, hunger, or thirst; they master sleep, sloth, anger, elation, and negligence. The sons of Pritha, ever mindful of both virtue and wealth, are always pleasing to all.'

This passage develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds already against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra, Sanjaya. Dharma here reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through fidelity to one's word, and through a king's responsibility for the consequences of his decisions.
