He considers what he already has to be his own. When Arjuna takes up his weapon for battle, Karna believes he can stand against him. Many great wars have taken place here before. Why, then, could Karna not help them then? Karna, Drona, and grandfather Bhishma, like many other Kurus, know well that there exists no wielder of the bow to compare with Arjuna. All the assembled rulers of the earth know how Duryodhana seized supreme power while Arjuna, that subduer of foes, was yet alive. The son of Dhritarashtra stubbornly believes it possible to take from the sons of Pandu what belongs to them, though he knows well that he himself went to the field of battle when Arjuna, wielding a bow of but four cubits as his only weapon, consoled himself with the thought of the fight to come. Dhritarashtra's sons are alive simply because they have not yet heard the sound of the drawn Gandiva. Duryodhana believes his purpose already accomplished -- until he sees Bhima enraged. O my lord, not even Indra could take our dominion from us while Bhima and Arjuna live, and heroic Nakula, and patient Sahadeva!

This passage (5.26.21-25) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war draws inexorably near. Key themes: the Pandavas, Duryodhana, Karna. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through faithfulness to one's word, and through the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
