All the Kurus follow in his footsteps. The thief who secretly steals wealth and the one who seizes it by force in broad daylight are both equally blameworthy, O Sanjaya. What difference is there between them and the sons of Dhritarashtra? Out of greed he considers righteous whatever he intends to do, following the dictates of his anger. The shares of the Pandavas are, without doubt, fixed. Why should this fool's share be taken from him? Under such circumstances, it would be praiseworthy even if we were killed in battle. A father's kingdom is preferable to sovereignty received from a stranger. These time-tested rules of law, O Sanjaya, you must explain to the Kurus assembled among the kings — I mean those dull-witted fools whom the son of Dhritarashtra has gathered, who already stand in the grip of death. Look once more at the most shameful of all their deeds — the conduct of the Kurus in the council hall. How those Kurus, led by Bhishma, did not intervene when the beloved wife of the sons of Pandu, the daughter of Drupada, renowned, of pure life and praiseworthy conduct, was seized, weeping, by that slave of lust.

This passage (5.29.31–35) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Krishna, the Pandavas, Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, dharma. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
