लाभालाभौ प्रियद्वेष्यौ यथैनं न जरान्तकौ ॥
विषहेरन् भयामर्षौ क्षुत्पिपासे मदोद्भवौ ॥
अरतिश् चैव तन्द्री च कामक्रोधौ क्षयोदयौ ॥

Therefore it behooves you to expound this, so that, hearing your words, this foremost of men may overcome all these sorrows -- gain and loss, the pleasant and the unpleasant, decrepitude and death, fear and jealousy, hunger and thirst, pride and prosperity, aversion, sleep, lust and anger, as well as decline and increase -- may all of this be borne by him!

This passage (5.41.11) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
