Duryodhana said: "Both the Pandavas and we are of one lineage; both they and we tread the same earth — why do you think victory will open itself only to the Pandavas? Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, the invincible Karna, Jayadratha, Somadatta, and Ashvatthaman — all mighty bowmen, endowed with immense energy — cannot be conquered even by Indra himself. What then can you say, O father of the Pandavas? All these noble and heroic kings of the earth, O father, are fully capable of opposing the Pandavas for my sake, while the latter are not even capable of looking upon my forces. The Pandavas, like a herd of young deer, will — I tell you — through our multitudes of chariots and our snares of arrows, along with all the Panchalas, be shattered." Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, my son speaks like a madman, for he is incapable of defeating the righteous Yudhishthira in battle. This Bhishma truly knows the might of the illustrious, powerful, virtuous, and noble Pandavas and their sons, and that is why he does not desire war with these renowned men. But tell me once more, O Sanjaya, of their movements. Tell me who is inciting these illustrious and mighty bowmen, endowed with such great vigor, as priests kindle sacrificial (homa) fires with oblations of clarified butter?
