Vaishampayana said: 'When Duryodhana, son of Dhritarashtra, paid little heed to the words spoken by Sanjaya, and the rest remained silent, the assembled kings rose and departed. And after all the kings of the earth had departed, King Dhritarashtra, who out of love always followed his son's counsel, wishing success to the assembled kings, began to question Sanjaya in private about the resolve of his own party and of the Pandavas, who were hostile to him.'

This fragment (5.67.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Dhritarashtra, Sanjaya, dharma. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
