The northern quarter, embracing the domain of virtue and named in honor of Kubera, Lord of treasures, is supported by the cow named Sarva-kamadugha. The gods, joining with the asuras and making Mount Mandara their churning-pole, churned the waters of the ocean and obtained the wine called Varuni, and (she who is called the goddess of prosperity and grace) Lakshmi, and Amrita, and that prince among horses named Uchchaihshravas, and that foremost of gems called Kaustubha.

This passage (5.102.16-20) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of embassy, fidelity to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
