Janamejaya said: 'Forever devoted to evil, blinded by greed, inclined to wicked deeds, resolved to bring ruin upon his own head, to stir grief in the hearts of his kinsmen, to deepen the sorrow of his friends, to cause suffering to all his well-wishers, to increase the joy of his enemies, and to walk the wrong path — why did his friends not try to restrain him, and why did the great friend of the Kuru race, the sage of tranquil soul, or the grandfather not say something to him out of love?' Vaishampayana said: 'Yes, the sage spoke. Bhishma too said what was useful. And Narada also spoke at length. Hear all that they said.' Vaishampayana continued: 'Narada said: "Rare are the people who heed the counsel of friends. Rare too are the friends who offer useful counsel, since the friend who needs advice is never where the friend who gives it can be found. O son of the Kuru race, I think one should heed the word of friends. Obstinacy should be avoided, for it is fraught with great evil. In this connection, the old story of Galava is cited — of one who met with disgrace through obstinacy."'
