There the daughters of Daksha, in primeval times, bore their children. There the sons of Kashyapa first multiplied. This quarter is the source of all the prosperity of the gods, for it was there that Shakra was first anointed king of the gods. It was there, O twice-born sage, that Indra and the gods underwent ascetic penance. For this reason, O Brahmin, this quarter is called Purva ("the first"). And since in most ancient times this quarter was settled by the suras, it is for this reason also called Purva. The gods, desiring prosperity, performed all their religious rites here. It was here that the divine Creator of the universe first sang the Vedas.

Fragment 5.108.6-10 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: an effort for peace is already underway against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to one's promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
